Scott Cirlin
My paintings begin with a rough idea or sketch, but after starting, it is unknown where the painting will go or what it will become, the original idea becoming buried under layer after layer of paint. Each stage of the canvas is an amalgam of my senses (sight, hearing, smell, etc.). I walk away and return over a period of days, weeks, or years to work and re-work it. I don’t believe a piece is completed until the partially obscured layers trigger a similar emotional state and cognitive process I experienced the precise moment they were created.
